Are You Socially Connected or Socially Rejected? By: TJ Haygood, Certified Personnel Consultant and CEO of Confidential Search Solutions, LLC What does your social club members, sorority sisters (or fraternity brothers); birth place, elementary school, high school, place of worship, company, favorite sports team, and your favorite vehicle have in common? They are all nouns yes! However, more importantly, they are people, places and things by which other people connect with you and by which you connect with others. Likewise that is what social networking does. It can connect you and other people together, including past connections and future ones. It is a vehicle or common ground by which you can connect with both professional and personal acquaintances. If you are not currently wired to at least one or two social networking sites, then I highly recommend getting connected as soon as you read this blog or at least by the next time you turn on your computer. It was very apparent in our empowerment training class today on “The Power & Value of Social Networking,” with Brian Shumaker from Jobing.com that over 50% of our class was not yet connected. However, immediately after the class, 100% of the participants either updated their information or are in the process of getting connected. It was an awesome class for everyone that attended. In my role as an executive recruiter, I have had clients who personally rejected some highly talented and accomplished professionals from further interview consideration after they discovered from their first interview or after a quick Google search that the candidates were not socially connected. We do not want this to happen to you. Many employers realize that being socially connected can make a difference between staying competitive or dying a slow death. It is also a huge indicator of how comfortable people are with change. If they appear not to be, then that is an immediate justification for employers to use in their decision to eliminate people. Companies today expect their people in general but especially their senior managers and sales representatives to be socially connected. They take it serious and expect their employees do too. Therefore, do yourself and your career a huge favor and get connected today. It will definitely help move your career in the right direction.
