Closing Date: 11/05/2009 Salary: $61,997.76 - $92,996.64 / Annually Date Posted: 10/22/2009 FLSA Status: Exempt Department: Animal Care Services Job Summary Under general direction, is responsible for performing veterinarian services in the City's Animal Care Program. Performs examinations on animals brought into the animal care facility; performs high volume spay and neuter surgeries; and prescribes euthanasia for badly injured or sick animals. Advises citizens on rabies control procedures. Exercises technical supervision over Veterinary Technicians and Animal Care Attendants. Essential Job Functions * Perform examinations on animals brought to the facility; * Answer questions from the public pertaining to veterinary public health issues; * Examine impounded animals and prescribe euthanasia for the sick or injured animals; * Certify animals in rabies quarantine to be free of rabies, and in the case of dead animal, prepare and forward tissue samples to be examined; * Follow up on requests for information from City Council and citizen groups through director's office; * Attend advisory board meetings, staff meetings, and committee meetings; * Prepare and conduct in-service training for staff; * Performs related duties and fulfills responsibilities as required. Skills / Requirements
Job/Driving Requirements * Graduation from an accredited college or university with a degree of Doctor of Veterinary Medicine; * Must be licensed to practice veterinary medicine in the State of Texas; * This position requires a valid Class "C" Texas Driver's License or obtain a valid Class "C" Texas Driver's License within thirty (30) days after becoming a resident of the State of Texas; * Use of your own vehicle may at times be required and proof of Liability Insurance will be required; * Substitution Ratio: No substitution education allowed; * ANY APPLICANT SELECTED FOR EMPLOYMENT WITH THE CITY OF SAN ANTONIO MUST RECEIVE SATISFACTORY RESULTS FROM PRE-EMPLOYMENT DRUG TESTING, REFERENCES, BACKGROUND CHECKS AND CREDENTIAL VERIFICATION. ADDITIONALLY, EMPLOYEES IN SENSITIVE OR HIGH RISK POSITIONS ARE SUBJECT TO INTERVAL CRIMINAL BACKGROUND CHECKS AND IN ACCORDANCE WITH TITLE 49 CODE OF FEDERAL REGULATIONS, EMPLOYEES IN CDL POSITIONS ARE SUBJECT TO RANDOM DRUG TESTING. Preferred Qualifications * Experience as a practicing Veterinarian is highly desirable; * Three years of experience in high volume spay/neuter surgeries; * Knowledge of veterinary medical procedures, techniques, methods, and practices; * Knowledge of animal control facility functions to include feeding and sanitation procedures; * Knowledge of State, Federal, and local laws and ordinances pertaining to animal control; * Knowledge of public health and rabies education procedures; * Knowledge of animal immunology procedures, techniques, and practices; * Ability to work effectively under stressful situations.
