Overall Job Objective

Summary

Operates telecommunication equipment such as a 800MHz Trunked Radio System, VHF Conventional Radio System, Computer Aided Dispatch (CAD) System, Criminal Integrated Justice System (CIJS), Records Management System (RMS), Computer Telephony 9-1-1 and Mapping System, hearing impaired teletype and digital logging recorder.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Operates telecommunication equipment such as a 800MHz Trunked Radio System, VHF Conventional Radio System, Computer Aided Dispatch (CAD) System, Criminal Integrated Justice System (CIJS), Records Management System (RMS), Computer Telephony 9-1-1 and Mapping System, hearing impaired teletype and digital logging recorder
  • Answers emergency and non-emergency calls from the general public and routes calls to other public safety agency dispatchers as needed
  • Responds to requests for information regarding CAD incident numbers, case numbers, arrival times, citizen addresses and other Public Safety Communications information
  • Researches law enforcement databases to verify information on individuals, such as drivers license validity, existence of protective orders, missing person stolen/recovered vehicle, warrants, vehicle registration and criminal history
  • Enters all pertinent information regarding all calls for service into the Computer Aided Dispatch (CAD) system
  • Dispatches for all fire departments in unincorporated Bexar County for medical and fire responses
  • Maintains the location of all Fire Department, Fire Marshal and Office of Emergency Management personnel
  • Performs related duties as required

Minimum Qualifications

  • Graduation from High School or a General Education Development (GED) certificate
  • Knowledge of adult learning principles; knowledge of geographical area
  • Skill in operating telecommunication equipment; skill in determining type and seriousness of calls
  • Skill to type 25 wpm with no more than 7 errors; Requires recent typing test administered by Workforce Solutions Alamo Career Centers (Please attach a copy of your typing results to your online application or fax them to (210) 335-2558 by the closing date.)
  • Ability to pay attention to detail, cooperate with others, maintain composure, control anger, and avoid aggressive behavior, even in very difficult situations; must have the ability to take on responsibilities and challenges; ability to lead, accept criticism, and deal calmly and effectively under high stress situations; ability to maintain effective working relationships with coworkers, Department/Division Heads, County employees, government agencies and the general public
  • Must secure and maintain a favorable background investigation and clearance
  • Must secure and maintain a pre-employment physical and a pre-employment drug screen test
  • Must obtain a Texas Law Enforcement Telecommunications Systems (TLETS) Certification, Telecommunications Officers License and complete all mandated training including a state exam within one (1) year of employment
  • Must be able to work shift-work, holidays and weekends
  • May be required to work more than 40 hours during a workweek
  • Must be available 24-hours a day, 7 days a week, unless on approved leave or by authorization
Working Environment and Physical Demands:
  • Constantly working in indoor conditions in a high volume call center
  • Work environment is fast paced
  • Occasionally moves objects weighing up to 5-10 pounds
  • Occasionally moves about office
  • Frequently communicates with others; must be able to exchange accurate information
  • Constantly operates a computer and other office productivity machinery
  • Constantly positions self to perform essential functions
  • Must be able to remain in a stationary position
